Running your own personal training business may be one of the most exciting, fulfilling and inspiring things you have ever done in your life!
If your day job is dull, boring and keeping you from getting out, meeting people, being active, and having fun – then it is definitely time for a change.
So how do you go about setting up your own personal training business? This blog post will give you some ideas of where to start.

1. Check your motivation
Are you a self-motivated person who is happy being your own boss? Do you have the discipline necessary to keep on top of business paperwork like tax returns, invoices and marketing? And most importantly, are you passionate about fitness and about helping others to lose weight, gain fitness and reach their personal goals?!
If you answered “Yes!!” to all of the above questions, then it is time to move on to the next step in the process …
2. Choose the right education NOT a personal training course
There are plenty of options out there for people wanting to learn how to be personal trainers, but very few that also incorporate the vital training you need to run a successful personal training business. Make sure you give yourself the very best chance at success, by choosing a course that really prepares you for the long term – teaching you how to create a profitable business that ensures you build a good client base, look after them well and continue to grow at a pace you can handle. If you are really motivated, you may find yourself with a team of trainers working for you within just a few years.
3. Decide on a niche target audience
Most successful personal trainers have found a niche audience that they are particularly passionate about working with. You can do this too. The first place to start is to think about yourself and clients who may be similar to you. For example, if you are a woman who has recently been successful at losing weight, other women looking to lose weight would be a good audience for you to target. Being able to use your personal experience is very powerful when you are working to motivate others.
4. Market yourself
Marketing yourself well is key to your success, and one of the best forms of marketing – that costs you nothing, is Word of Mouth. Which means, if you are doing a great job with your clients, they will talk about you to their friends and family and your business will naturally grow from those referrals. Of course you need some clients to start out with, and often it can be a good idea to work with some people for free or at a reduced rate to help get that momentum going. Make sure you establish yourself online too – setting up a website using something like WordPress is a good place to start, and once again, very low cost. Link your website to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and start building those relationships – that’s what it’s all about!
5. Make yoru clients say WOW every day!
Great word of mouth marketing comes from you doing a great job every day with your clients, and ultimately from your clients getting the results they are looking for. Kick off every day with a positive attitude, be a fun person to work with and your new business will be off to a great start!
